Every snowshoe tour around Tromsø provides the snowshoes and a guide who sets the pace, so the choice comes down to a handful of facts you can check on each listing: where you walk, how long, with how many people and from what age. Our verdict rests on those facts and on what reviewers say about the effort.
Wilderness or close to town
The wilderness hikes take you out to Kvaløya, between about 25 minutes and an hour by car, for open snowfields, mountains and fjord views. The city-close walks stay in the forest on Tromsøya, about 10 minutes from the centre, or start right at the Fjellheisen cable car in Tromsdalen with no transfer at all. They are a good introduction, not deep wilderness, and some reviewers of city-close tours missed exactly that. Choosing a snowshoe tour weighs the formats in detail, and the city-close walks have their own page.
Effort and fitness
Snowshoeing in fresh snow is harder than it looks, and uphill it becomes real cardio. The city-close walks and the reindeer combo, whose snowshoe leg reviewers put at roughly 2 kilometres, are the gentlest. The Kaldfjord hike of Arctic Cruise In Norway climbs slowly to a small summit. The wilderness hikes of about three hours on snowshoes ask the most. Book for the least fit person in your group. Fitness and gear ranks every tour by effort.
Group size
Wandering Owl takes groups of up to 15. Legendary Adventure caps both its day hike and its evening hike at 8, Unique Norway Tours runs groups of at most 8 or private tours, the Kaldfjord hike takes at most 7, and the walk from the cable car at most 4. Earthling and Unique Norway Tours show only a few dates on the calendar, so they may not run on your day. Wilderness hikes compared.
Minimum age
Wandering Owl and Unique Norway Tours take children from 6, the Tromsøya walk and the reindeer combo from 8, Legendary Adventure (day and evening, according to the operator) and the cable-car walk from 10, and the husky combo from 13 according to the operator. The Kaldfjord hike states no minimum age. The fact sheet on the home page lists the age for each tour.
Season and light
The core season runs from November to March, and Wandering Owl runs the longest, from 1 October to 15 April. From late November to mid-January daytime tours walk in blue twilight around midday; February and March bring solid snow with real daylight. Best time for snowshoeing and polar night and daylight go through it month by month.
Northern lights and animals
The evening hike by Legendary Adventure at Ersfjordbotn spends about three hours on snowshoes away from the city lights. The northern lights are possible on clear nights, never promised. The husky combo pairs a hike with huskies on the leash with time at the Villmarkssenter camp on Kvaløya, and the reindeer combo is the calmer day with reindeer time and a warm lunch. Neither is a sled ride. Aurora snowshoe evening, husky combo, reindeer combo.
